Former Onslow County Manager Sharon Griffin is now the interim Carteret County attorney after a unanimous vote Monday by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners.
Griffin resigned as Onslow County manager in October, just months after the censure of Onslow County Commissioner Walter Scott.
While Griffin did not cite a reason for his resignation, Scott was censured for various reasons that included alleged “continued and repeated displays of disrespect, actions and demeaning communication towards the Onslow County manager, department directors and staff members,” according to previous reporting by The Daily News.
After resigning, Griffin said he’d returned to private legal practice as an attorney and certified mediator for Mewborn & DeSelms.
She was unanimously voted in as the interim county attorney for Carteret County Monday night following former attorney Rob Wheatly’s firing last month. The board voted to discontinue Wheatly’s contract by a vote of 5-2 at the February meeting, one of the “no” votes being from Wheatly’s brother, Ed, who serves on the board.
Griffin served as Onslow County manager for four years and was deputy manager for two before that.
During her time as deputy county manager, Griffin helped guide the county through Hurricane Florence response and recovery. As the county manager, she provided valuable leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded the upcoming expansion of the Emergency Operations Center, according to previous reporting by The Daily News.
