Newport News attorney James L. Windsor has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Traver Award by the Virginia State Bar Real Property Section.
Windsor has worked at Kaufman & Canoles since 1987, where he currently chairs the Real Estate Claims & Title Insurance Solutions Group and co-chairs the Government & Municipal Law Group.
A graduate of James Madison University and the University of Richmond School of Law, Windsor has focused his 38-year legal career on real estate, real property, title insurance and civil litigation. Since 1996, he has presented more than 120 seminars on real estate-related topics.
Windsor received the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Land Title Association in 2015 and has been noted for donating his time in teaching seminars and authoring articles and resource materials for fellow real estate professionals.
In the awards presentation at the Real Property Section’s spring meeting in March, Newport News attorney Paula Caplinger said that Windsor “has consistently demonstrated a willingness to invest time and energy in guiding and nurturing the next generation of legal minds.”
“His commitment to mentorship goes beyond professional development, extending into the realms of personal growth and ethical responsibility,” she said. “This dedication to fostering the success of others is a true embodiment of the values that the Traver Scholar Award seeks to honor.”
The Traver Award is given annually to honor a lawyer “who embodies the highest ideals and expertise in the practice of real estate law,” according to the VSB. The award’s recipients are members of the VSB Real Property Section who “have made significant contributions to the practice of real property law generally and the section specifically and have generously shared their knowledge with others.”
