Bharat Bandh 2024 Highlights: A sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh have been called by the workers and farmers on 16 February, Friday.

The farmers’ body Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) has urged all like-minded farmer organisations to unite and take part in the February 16 Bharat Bandh. The day-long protest will begin from 6 AM to 4 PM. Farmers reportedly will join massive chakka jams on main roads nationwide from 12 pm to 4 pm on Friday. Most of the state and national highways will be closed for four hours in Punjab on Friday.

As per media report, various private and government offices, and village shops may remain shut today. Besides, transportation, agricultural activities, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) rural works, and rural industrial and service sector institutions are also likely to remain closed.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a Minimum Support Price for crops based on the Swaminathan formula of C2 50 (input cost of capital 50%), legal guarantee of procurement, debt waiver, no hike in electricity tariff and no smart metres.

They have also demanded free 300 units of power for farming for domestic use and shops, comprehensive crop insurance, and a hike in pensions to 10,000 per month among others.

In view of the Bharat Bandh called by farmers’ unions on Friday, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police on Thursday said restrictions under CrPC Section 144, including a ban on unauthorized public assemblies, would be enforced across the district, reported news agency PTI.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE:Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said his party will accept long-pending demands of farmers in the country and ensure a legal guarantee to minimum support price (MSP) of crops if the INDIA bloc comes to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing the ‘Kisan Nyay Panchayat’, a gathering of farmers, in Bihar’s Rohtas, as part of his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, Gandhi claimed that “cultivators are not getting the remunerative prices for their crops”.

“If the INDIA bloc comes to power after the general elections, we will give a legal guarantee to MSP. Whenever farmers have asked for something from the Congress, it has been given to them. Be it loan waiver or MSP, we have always protected the interests of cultivators and will do so in future,” Gandhi said.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: Farmers to stay put at Punjab-Haryana borders as deadlock persists

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: Protesting farmers will stay put at the two borders of Punjab and Haryana over their various demands as the deadlock persisted despite the third round of talks with a panel of Union ministers.

A five-hour meeting, which started around 8:45 pm on Thursday, between three Union ministers and the farmer leaders remained inconclusive.

The two sides will now meet on February 18 for the fourth round of talks. The two previous rounds of dialogue on February 8 and 12 also remained inconclusive.

Union Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Arjun Munda, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai represented the Centre at Thursday’s meeting over the farmer unions’ various demands, including a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: A 63-year-old farmer, who was among the farmers protesting at the Shambhu border near Haryana’s Ambala, died of a heart attack on Friday, officials said.

Gian Singh complained of chest pain in the morning and was taken to the Civil Hospital in Punjab’s Rajpura. From there, he was rushed to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where doctors declared him brought dead, they said.

Singh, who hailed from Punjab’s Gurdaspur district had come to the Shambhu border two days ago to participate in the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march aimed at pressing the government to accept their demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: Commuters in Punjab faced inconvenience on Friday as many buses stayed off the roads in response to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ to press the government to accept farmers’ demands including a legal guarantee of MSP. Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union are supporting the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s (SKM) bandh call. During the day, farmers will also hold demonstrations at many places in Punjab under the banner of the SKM. Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra said on Thursday that the party will support the call of bandh by farmers for their demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price for their crops.

“Farmers have called for a bandh on Friday. The Congress has also decided to support the farmers’ strike call. We will remain with the farmers’ movement while ensuring that there is no violence, no damage to any government property,” Dotasra told reporters at a press conference.

Targeting the central government on the farmers’ movement, Dotasra said the BJP government at the Centre had made three “black laws” for a few industrialists and not for the benefit of farmers.

“The three black laws were imposed on the farmers for the benefit of a few industrialists and not for the benefit of farmers,” he said.

Accusing the government of adopting an “unfair attitude” towards the farmers, he said, “Today again when the farmers are protesting peacefully and are trying to express their views, they are being suppressed and bullets are being fired, tear gas is being released, they are being attacked with drones. In this democratic country, does noone have the right to protest and express their views?”

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that he has requested the Centre to direct the Haryana government to ‘maintain peace’ in border areas in view of the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police on Thursday said restrictions under CrPC Section 144, including a ban on unauthorised public assemblies, would be enforced across the district in view of Bharat Bandh called by farmers’ unions on Friday.

The police also cautioned commuters going to Delhi and coming back from the capital city of traffic diversions in Noida and urged citizens to opt for metro rail service “as far as possible” to avoid inconvenience.

According to the order, unlawful assembly of five or more people, unauthorised processions or demonstrations, including political or religious, are prohibited.

The order also bars the use of private drones in a radius of one km of government establishments and also bans people from carrying sticks, rods, tridents, swords, firearms and the likes in public places.

In a traffic advisory, the police said intensive checking will be done by installing barriers on all the borders of Noida and Delhi by the police on both sides due to which there will be a pressure on vehicular movement and traffic would be diverted according to requirement.

“People going to Delhi please use Metro as much as possible to avoid traffic inconvenience. Arrival of all types of goods vehicles will be restricted on the route from Yamuna Expressway to Delhi via Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and from Sirsa to Surajpur via Pari Chowk. To avoid traffic inconvenience, drivers can use alternative routes to reach their destination,” the police said.

Bharat Bandh 2024 LIVE: According to India.com report, various private and government offices, and village shops is likely to remain shut today. Besides, transportation, agricultural activities, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) rural works, and rural industrial and service sector institutions are likely to remain closed. However, Emergency services such as ambulance operations, marriage, medical shops, school, etc., will not be affected during the Bandh.
